Technology Tip Sheet For Parents

  • No technology before age 2 to 5
  • No screens in a child’s bedroom
  • No smart phones for minors
  • No online gaming
  • No cell phones or gaming before the age of 7
  • No more than 2 hours of entertainment screen time per day
  • No pornography
  • TECHNOLOGY USE IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT
  • Avoid using technology as a baby sitter, as background noise, to keep your kids quiet
  • Avoid using technology as a reward for anything including grades
  • Take tech-free family vacations
  • Unplug Before you Drug
  • Educate yourself, become more computer-savvy
  • Start early: Discuss the pros and cons of internet use, cell phones and gaming
  • Teach children basic internet safety
  • Set reasonable rules and do not feel guilty about enforcement
  • Do not worry that by controlling access to technology you are a bad parent or limiting their learning
  • Model a well-balanced life and don’t let the screen be your child’s parent
  • Take a complete inventory of all electronic devices in the home and who uses each for how long and when
  • Make a list for each family member of preferred activities and alternative activities to media use
  • Make informed decisions and avoid reflex choices such as handing a bored child your iPhone, or using DVDs in the car
  • Hold family meetings
  • Make plans in advance, appropriate boundaries
  • Get support and get help if you need it
  • Know your parenting styles, get on the same page, be consistent
  • Start the dialogue with extended family, the parents of your kid’s friends, your medical professionals, PTA, teachers etc.
  • Spend quality time with your kids
  • Know the risks of excessive technology use
  • Know the warning signs of overuse and addiction
  • Know who is at risk for overuse and addiction
